It feels like a machine that sprays water for two hours must use more than a quick scrub at the sink — but the research consistently shows the opposite for typical loads. The water question: it’s not close

This is where the dishwasher’s advantage is biggest and most surprising. Research at the University of Bonn — the group that has studied dishwashing behaviour more than anyone — found that a full dishwasher used about 13 litres of water to clean 144 items, while washing the same quantity by hand used around 100 litres on average [1]. Households without a dishwasher used more than twice as much water on dishes as those with one. UK testing by Which? reached the same conclusion: dishwashers use a fraction of the water hand-washing does [2].

Why such a gap? A dishwasher recirculates a small amount of water with a pump, spraying it repeatedly over the dishes, then draining and refilling only a few times. Hand-washing, by contrast, tends to involve either a big bowl of water or — the real culprit — a tap running the whole time. A running hot tap can pour out 6–9 litres a minute, so ten minutes at the sink can use more water than an entire dishwasher cycle. The way most people actually wash up is the least efficient method of all.

The energy question

Most of the energy in dishwashing goes on one thing: heating the water. Because a dishwasher uses so much less water, it needs less energy to heat it. In the Bonn comparison, a dishwasher cycle used about 0.96 kWh, against roughly 2.73 kWh for the hot water used washing by hand — almost three times less [1]. Modern machines are also cleverly engineered to reuse heat and run efficient cycles.

Two things maximise this advantage:

  • Use the eco cycle. It runs longer but at a lower temperature, using less energy and water than the “normal” or “intensive” programmes. Counter-intuitively, the slowest cycle is usually the greenest.
  • Only run full loads. A half-empty dishwasher throws away its efficiency advantage. Wait until it’s properly full before running it.

The hygiene question: hotter than your hands can bear

Here’s the part people rarely think about. Killing bacteria on dishes takes heat — and the limiting factor when you wash by hand is your own skin. Comfortable washing-up water is around 40–45°C; much above that and you’d scald yourself. A dishwasher is under no such constraint. Its wash and final rinse run far hotter — sanitation standards call for a final rinse of around 65°C (150°F) or above to actually sanitise dishes, and many machines get hotter still, finishing with a hot drying phase that hands can never match.

The measured results follow:

  • Researchers at Ohio State University found machine-washed dishes typically carried fewer than 100 colony-forming units of bacteria — below the threshold generally considered safe [3].
  • Hand-washing studies have found that even after a careful wash, a large share of dishes still carried detectable coliform bacteria, largely because the water isn’t hot enough and scrubbing is inconsistent [3].

When hand-washing actually wins

The dishwasher isn’t always the answer. Hand-washing is genuinely the better choice when:

  • You’ve only got a few items. Running a nearly empty dishwasher wastes its efficiency; a mug and a plate are quicker and greener by hand.

  • The item can’t go in a machine (see the next section). Some things are damaged by dishwasher heat, detergent or water jets.
  • You don’t own a dishwasher — in which case the goal is simply to hand-wash efficiently.

In other words, the honest verdict isn’t “dishwashers always win” — it’s “a full, eco-cycle dishwasher beats typical hand-washing, and disciplined two-bowl hand-washing beats a half-empty dishwasher.” Method matters as much as machine.

What you should never put in a dishwasher

Some things really do belong at the sink. The dishwasher’s heat, alkaline detergent and forceful jets damage certain materials:

Everyday crockery, glasses, cutlery, and most modern “dishwasher-safe” items are fine — but when in doubt, check for a dishwasher-safe symbol or wash by hand.

How to get the most from your dishwasher

  • Don’t pre-rinse — just scrape. This is the single biggest mistake. Modern detergents and the machine’s soil sensors actually need a bit of food residue to work against, and rinsing every plate under a running tap can waste more water than the whole cycle saves. Scrape food into the bin and load it dirty.
  • Run full loads on the eco cycle — the most efficient combination.
  • Load it properly: dirtiest surfaces facing the spray arms, nothing blocking the arms, cutlery separated so it doesn’t nest.

Used properly, a modern dishwasher is the greener choice for typical households: less water, less energy to heat that water, and therefore a lower carbon footprint per item washed — plus it frees up your time. But “used properly” is doing a lot of work in that sentence. The efficiency evaporates if you run half-empty loads, pick the intensive cycle, or — worst of all — rinse everything under a hot tap before loading. Do those things and hand-washing might actually come out ahead. The machine is a tool; the habits around it decide whether it’s efficient.
