Soap removes germs, dirt and even chemicals by lifting them off your skin so the water rinses everything away. Everything about soap versus sanitiser comes down to two completely different strategies. Soap doesn’t really “kill” germs so much as evict them. Soap molecules have a split personality: one end loves water, the other loves grease and oil. When you lather up, the grease-loving ends bury themselves into the oily grime and microbes on your skin, wrapping each speck in a tiny bubble called a micelle. The water-loving ends face outward, so when you rinse, the whole lot — germs, dirt, oils and even many chemicals — simply washes down the drain [2][3].

Alcohol works differently. It doesn’t lift anything off; instead it destroys microbes on the spot by dissolving their fatty outer membranes and unravelling (denaturing) their proteins. That kills a lot of germs quickly — but the dead microbes, along with any dirt, grease or chemicals, are still sitting on your hand afterwards [3].

This is why the honest comparison isn’t “which is stronger” but “which job do you need doing”. If your hands are contaminated with something alcohol can’t kill, or with grime and chemicals that need physically removing, only soap and water will truly clean them. If your hands are reasonably clean and you just need to knock down germs fast with no sink nearby, sanitiser does that well.

When hand sanitiser is genuinely fine

None of this means sanitiser is useless — far from it. Used correctly, an alcohol-based sanitiser reduces germs on the hands very effectively, and it’s the reason it’s a fixture in hospitals. It’s a great choice when:

  • There’s no soap and water to hand — on public transport, in the car, out shopping, between meetings.
  • Your hands aren’t visibly dirty or greasy — sanitiser shines on hands that are already fairly clean [1].

Why 60% is the magic number (and 100% is worse)

Not all sanitisers are equal, and the single most important thing on the label is the alcohol percentage. Many studies find that sanitisers between 60% and 95% alcohol kill germs far more effectively than weaker ones; below 60%, a sanitiser may only slow the growth of germs rather than kill them outright [1]. Here’s the counter-intuitive part: pure 100% alcohol is actually less effective than 70%. How to use each one properly

Both are only as good as your technique — and most people rush both.

Washing with soap and water:

  1. Wet your hands, apply soap, and lather all surfaces — backs of hands, between fingers, under nails.
  2. Scrub for at least 20 seconds (about humming “Happy Birthday” twice) — the scrubbing time is what lifts germs free [2].

A safety word on sanitiser

Alcohol sanitiser is safe used as intended, but two points are worth knowing. First, it’s flammable until it dries, so let it evaporate before touching a flame or hob. Second, and more importantly, swallowing it can cause alcohol poisoning — US poison centres logged nearly 85,000 calls about hand-sanitiser exposures in children over one five-year period. Scented, brightly coloured bottles are especially tempting to young children, so store sanitiser out of reach and supervise little ones using it [1].
