As a rule of thumb, the viruses behind colds, flu and COVID survive on a hard surface for hours to a few days, while bacteria like E. coli, Salmonella and Staphylococcus (including MRSA) — and especially the tough spores of Clostridium difficile — can linger for weeks or months. Two things stop this being scary. The most thorough summary of the evidence — a systematic review of dozens of laboratory studies — found survival times spanning an astonishing range, from under two hours to several years, depending on the organism [1]. The chart below plots the typical range for the germs you’re most likely to care about at home, on a logarithmic scale (each gridline is ten times the last), because a normal scale simply couldn’t fit hours and years on the same line:
Reading it top to bottom tells the whole story. The respiratory viruses cluster on the left: influenza lasts around 1–2 days on a hard surface, the common cold (rhinovirus) and norovirus up to about a week, and SARS-CoV-2 (COVID) up to roughly three days [1][2]. The bacteria and spores sprawl across the right: Staphylococcus aureus and MRSA persist for 7 days to 7 months, E. coli up to 16 months, Salmonella in some studies for years, and C. difficile spores for about 5 months [1]. Gram-negative bacteria generally outlast gram-positive ones, and spores — dormant, armoured survival packages — are the hardiest of all.
Why viruses fade fast but bacteria linger
The split in that chart isn’t random — it comes down to biology:
- Enveloped viruses are fragile. Flu and coronaviruses wrap themselves in a delicate fatty (lipid) envelope that dries out and falls apart in the open air, which is why they last only hours to days and why soap — which dissolves that envelope — destroys them so easily.
- Non-enveloped viruses are tougher. Norovirus and rhinovirus lack that fragile coat, so they shrug off drying better and can last a week or more — part of why norovirus outbreaks are so hard to stop.
- Bacteria are living cells that can withstand drying for far longer, especially the hardy gram-negative species, surviving weeks to months on a dry surface.
- Spores are survival capsules. When conditions turn hostile, bacteria like C. difficile form dormant spores with a tough protective shell. They can sit inert for months and revive later — and they resist alcohol sanitisers and many disinfectants, which is why soap-and-water removal matters so much.

What makes germs last longer
The ranges in the chart are wide because survival depends heavily on conditions. Four factors push germs toward the long end [1]:

Does the surface matter?
Yes — sometimes a lot. The clearest illustration came from the early-pandemic study of SARS-CoV-2, which measured how long the virus stayed viable on different materials [2]:

Copper is naturally antimicrobial (it damages microbes on contact), porous cardboard dries virus out relatively quickly, and smooth plastic and steel are the friendliest to it. The same broad ranking holds for many germs: smooth, non-porous, hand-touched surfaces — door handles, taps, light switches, phone screens, worktops — are the ones worth wiping, because they both hold germs and pass them straight to your hands.
“Surviving” isn’t the same as “infecting”
This is the crucial caveat that headlines usually skip. When a study says a germ “survives 72 hours,” it means some live germs were still detectable — not that the surface stays dangerous for three days. In reality the number of viable germs falls rapidly, often by 99% in the first hours, and you generally need a certain minimum dose to actually get ill. You also have to touch the surface and then your eyes, nose or mouth to complete the journey.
That’s why public-health bodies treat surfaces (fomites) as a secondary route for most respiratory viruses, behind breathing shared air and close contact. It doesn’t mean surfaces don’t matter — for norovirus and gut bacteria they matter a great deal — but it does mean you can relax about the idea that every doorknob is a three-day death trap. Sensible, targeted cleaning beats round-the-clock disinfecting.

Put the science together and a simple, low-effort strategy falls out:
- Target high-touch surfaces. Door handles, taps, light switches, the fridge handle, remote controls and phone screens are touched constantly and pass germs to hands — wipe these regularly rather than obsessing over floors and walls.
- Step it up when it matters. Clean and disinfect more often when someone’s ill, during norovirus or flu season, and after handling raw meat — these are the moments the germs on surfaces genuinely count [3].
